Get It! turtlenyc: I had a bit of a backlog of good stuff to share this month so I put together this playlist. It’s a little heavy on darker synthpop. Find a dank basement with a blacklight. Dance party for one. Closer My Disco My Disco is an Australian band (yep, another one). Their new release …

Monday: What do you do in the morning to get you...
Honestly? I pray. Because nothing says “put me in a mental institution” like deciding to become a chef. I always try to go in with a positive attitude. I always think of myself as Tita from “Like Water for Chocolate”. I don’t want any bad juju in my food - it’ll mess it all up!

My culo
was handed to me today. I now realize why chefs are always cooking, always doing something in the kitchen. Practice makes perfect, y’all. I opted to stay out of the kitchen during WoF: Japan because I didn’t want to do anything to harm my wrist. Maybe I should’ve not just stuffed my face with free Japanese food, and came home and cooked something. Tomorrow will be better, just...

Sunday: What is the strangest place you’ve ever...
I fell asleep right in the middle of Disneyland. True story. A more interesting question would be “Where is the strangest place you’ve ever woken up?”

You wanna know?  I ate mashed potatoes with country gravy, banana cream pie and a gingerbread latte for dinner. BOOM.

Friday: Name a food that you don’t understand why...
I’ve got a whole list, but we’ll talk about the two that I had recently and couldn’t figure out why everyone was going apeshit about it. 1) Caviar. In class, the caviar guy showed up with what probably amounted to $3,000 in caviar. His visit was kind of a big deal; the whole morning of Seafood I.D. was just us making toast points, eggs, and blini. Anyhow, there’s all...

LIFE.
Is really good. Like, really really good.  I could always complain about some things, but right now I choose not to.  I’ll be off work in about 9 hours, only to go on R.A. Duty for another 3 hours right after.  But I’m happy. I’m all smiles. I can’t wait to get today started.

Thursday: Name something that has surprised you...
It has been 2 weeks since I’ve spontaneously burst out crying from being homesick. I think I’m on the way to being a big girl now! (I still really miss home and my mom and the way she smells. I can’t wait until Thanksgiving.)

Monday: Name on thing that you accomplished last...
I made it through my first week of Skills I without maiming myself like the rest of my classmates. It seriously kicked my ass on how hard it was, and it’s not really that hard. I just had to learn how to channel my energy in a different way, and I totally have kitchen ADD. It was a bit of a struggle. Oh, and I had to learn really quick that I don’t know everything. Who knew? It was...

Scary Crush?
I don’t have one, honestly. See, the past two months have been rocky on the love front. I would love to have a man-friend but it doesn’t seem to be happening for me. And I learned long ago that if the shoe don’t fit, don’t force it. So. Yeah. Plus people were telling me I was starting to sound really bitter, so I decided to shut up about the whole thing. No one likes it...

Math Nerd
I am horrible at math. No, really. I’m in the process of learning Metric and converting to and fro and it’s killing me. Really. But I love to watch other people do math. I love happy primes, Fibonacci, and the Mandelbrot Set. I think it’s amazing how that just makes sense to some people. I figure it’s like how I love being in the kitchen and some people get in there and...

The One Thing That Makes Me Really Happy
Travelling. It’s an easy one - who doesn’t love to travel? I went to England in 2006. I didn’t bring a cell phone. I didn’t bring a computer. 9 Days, a RailPass, my suitcase and passport. I don’t think I’ve been that happy since. It may be my Military Brat in me trying to get out. My dad was stationed in one place for 21 years. He never wanted to leave San...

Guidance and Assurance
During yesterday’s food safety class, I snuck off to sneak pix of the Viking kitchen. A complete state of the art kitchen comprising of 3 cooking suites, lots of prep and counter space and state of the art hoods. It’s a dream y’all. I was snooping around by myself because my team ditched me! I overheard them calling me “weird” but I think that’s code for...

Reward system
Whenever I can make it through a full day without being homesick, I reward myself. Today’s reward was my electric kettle and tea supplies. I keep busy- Went to see “The Town” and it was really good. Then had my usual walk by the river and did shopping for the week. Downside of today: finding out that I can’t go home the entire Thanksgiving week. Ho hum.

Nightclub - Billy Collins
You are so beautiful and I am a fool to be in love with you is a theme that keeps coming up in songs and poems. There seems to be no room for variation. I have never heard anyone sing I am so beautiful and you are a fool to be in love with me, even though this notion has surely crossed the minds of women and men alike. You are so beautiful, too bad you are a fool is another one you don’t...
